My current position is Vice President Finance, Accounting & IS for
Shurgard in Europe. Shurgard is a company active in self storage, a new
real estate sector in Europe (very mature in the US). The business
entails real estate development, capital raising related to this, retail
operations, and asset management (very similar to the hotel business).
After business school I worked for a while on a ISO9001 implementation
in the US, before joining one of the big five (four) accounting firms. I
joined Shurgard as a very early start up (10 people), and managed the
financial and asset management part of the business through very strong
growth during the last five years. Only recently IT was added to my
responsibilities. Leisure is focused on sports (tennis & golf), and
family activities.
|
| Issues he/she ist most
experienced about and willing to share: |
| My most relevant experience
must be managing in a strong growth environment. It is about hiring
people at high speed, integrating them into an unstructured environment.
The key challenges are related to people, find the ones that thrive on
chaos and independance, and also on finding a balance between
entrepreneurship and structure. As the company grows issues such as
company culture, sense of community etc start to arise. Other challenges
are how to avoid people to burn up quickly, and how to keep the
entrepreneurs as the company grows. |
| |
| Issues he/she would like
to learn about: |
| The eternal issue is how to
keep a balance between work and family. The other one is how to be sure
that the direction the company is steered in is the appropriate one. How
can we keep ourselves out of the activity mode, and keep strategy in
mind at all times. |

Government, and the commercialisation of Government businesses. I am a
